- QUICK ANSWER
What is Happy Kid Functional Medicine?
Happy Kid Functional Medicine is a pediatric functional medicine practice for children whose symptoms have never been fully explained. I work with families who have already tried therapy, medications and strategies, and are still dealing with aggression, sleep trouble and daily chaos at home. I use objective testing to find what has been missed, then build one tailored plan the family can actually live with. I work alongside your pediatrician, not in place of them.
WHO I SERVE
Does this sound like your child?
The families who find me have usually been at this a long time. They have seen the pediatrician, a specialist or two, maybe a nutritionist. They have been given a label, or several. They have collected pieces of an explanation from different people and never once had someone put the pieces together.
They are exhausted. They are advocating hard for a child who cannot advocate for themselves. And they know, the way only a parent knows, that something biological is driving what everyone else keeps calling behavioral.
If you recognise your child below, start there.
Focus that is a daily fight
Homework that takes three hours. Mornings that fall apart. A checklist at school said ADHD, and something about that answer never sat right with you.
A belly nobody can explain
Constipation, reflux, stomachaches, eczema, extreme picky eating. You have already been told to add fiber and water and wait it out.
Sleep that never comes easily
A child who cannot fall asleep, stirs all night, or is wide awake at two in the morning. Nobody in the house has been rested in a long time.
A child who changed drastically
Sudden OCD, rage, food refusal, urinary changes, or handwriting that fell apart. The change was fast enough that you can nearly name the week.
Support around an autism diagnosis
You love your child exactly as they are and you want them comfortable in their own body. Both of those are true at the same time.
A folder full of normal labs
Results from several specialists, each showing a glimpse, none of it ever put together. You still do not know what to do next.

Wondering if the answer is in their genes
You want to know why your child reacts to things other kids tolerate, and why the supplement that helped everyone else made yours worse
Symptoms that started with the house
A move, a leak, a basement, a smell you cannot place. Your child has not been the same since, and the timing has always bothered you.
GETTING STARTED
How does working together start?
It starts with a conversation, not a commitment. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you reach out.
The Happy Kid Consult
A free, relaxed call about your child and everything you have already tried. I mostly listen. I ask a few clarifying questions. There is nothing to prepare.
I tell you honestly whether I can help
At the end of that call I tell you what I am thinking, what testing I believe would give us the most value, and what it would cost. If someone else is a better fit for your child, I say so.
The deep dive
Your first real visit. Your child's whole story, start to finish, with time to actually tell it. Testing is chosen for your child, not pulled off a shelf.
You also get to hear about me, so you can decide whether we are aligned. That part matters as much as the clinical part.

THE DIFFERENCE
Why do families call me the missing piece finder?
Because I am not trying to manage your child's symptoms, and I am not trying to give them another label. Most of the children who come to me already have one. Sometimes it fits. Sometimes it does not. Either way, once a label is written down, every provider after that refers everything back to it. Your child has hard behaviors? That is the autism. Sudden aggression? Let's adjust the medication.
Nobody is listening to the fact that this is new. That something changed. That is what I hated watching happen, and it is the reason this practice exists.
The missing pieces are specific things. The low ferritin nobody checked. The infection that was never looked for. The gut that was never tested. The sleep that has been broken for two years. Put enough of those pieces on the table and you finally get a clear picture.
I will never tell a parent this is just how it is. More often than not, it is not true.

NEW TO THIS
New to functional medicine? Most families are.
Healthy skepticism is welcome here. It is how you protect your kid, and I would rather you ask hard questions than nod along.
Functional medicine asks why symptoms keep happening and then goes looking for the answer. It looks at the gut, nutrients, the immune system, genomics and sleep, alongside your pediatrician rather than in place of them. It is not a replacement for the care your child already has. It is the layer nobody has had time to look at.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amy Patton, DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC
Pediatric nurse practitioner and founder of Happy Kid Functional Medicine
'm a pediatric nurse practitioner with more than a decade of clinical experience, and the founder of Happy Kid Functional Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. I started my career in underserved communities and spent years in primary care watching the same children come back with the same unresolved symptoms, handed from specialist to specialist while nobody actually got to the bottom of it. I built this practice so those families would have somewhere else to go.
If this is an emergency, do not wait on me. If your child is in crisis right now, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or go to your nearest emergency department. For a sudden severe medical change, heavy bleeding, trouble breathing, or a seizure, call 911 or your child’s pediatrician.
I am the person you call about the plan we built together, about a reaction to something we started, and about symptoms getting worse on my watch.

Not on that list? Reach out anyway. I would rather tell you honestly what I can and can't do than leave you guessing, and if I can't see you I'll point you toward someone who can.

I help parents who feel like they have tried everything for their child, therapies, medications and strategies, but are still dealing with aggression, sleep troubles and daily chaos, uncover what has been missed so they can finally experience calm, regulation and connection at home.
You are not failing your child. You are not overreacting. You are not alone in this anymore.
With you in this, Amy
